Book of Dead vs Legacy of Dead: max win and volatility
Play'n GO does not publish a max win for either game, so no ceiling can be compared. Legacy of Dead's studio page mentions a potential of up to 250000 coins in free spins, but that is not a bet multiple and does not translate into dollars. Volatility labels are published: High for Book of Dead and Very high for Legacy of Dead.
Free spins compared
Three or more scatters start the free spins in both. Book of Dead awards 10 and Legacy of Dead awards 8. A retrigger by 3 or more scatters adds the same number again: 10 or 8. Legacy of Dead also chooses an additional special expanding symbol at random with each retrigger.
How the expanding symbol differs
In Book of Dead an ordinary symbol is picked before the free spins begin. After regular wins are counted, it may expand to cover all three positions of its reel, but only if that adds prizes along an active payline. In Legacy of Dead a regular symbol other than the scatter is chosen, and when enough of it lands they expand to cover all reel positions. Neither needs the symbols to be adjacent.
The gamble round in both games
Both offer an optional gamble round after any main-game win. Guessing a card's colour has a 1 in 2 chance of doubling the win, and guessing its suit has a 1 in 4 chance of quadrupling it. It can be played up to five times in a row. It is a pure chance step, so it only adds variance.
Which one should you try first
Start with Book of Dead for 10 free spins and the High label. Start with Legacy of Dead if you want the higher RTP and can accept Very high volatility.
Verdict
Book of Dead suits readers who want the older, classic setup: 96.21% top RTP, High volatility and 10 free spins. Legacy of Dead suits those who accept Very high volatility for a 96.58% top RTP, 8 free spins and an extra expanding symbol on retriggers. Play'n GO publishes no max win for either, so the labels and RTP versions are the numbers to compare.
